excerpts from thesis proposal

From my honors theis proposal, written September 2008, Impermanence:

"Each item will illustrate a universal change a human body experiences over a lifetime. Despite the constancy of change, physical forms help evoke various memories of ideas and experiences that provide a personal way of dealing with and accepting change. The objects of this collection will be coping mechanisms or memorial pieces that will evoke memories and past experiences in the viewers. Since everyone experiences change differently, each person will view the collection with a unique response. I will create these objects in response to my own personal experience with change, but the objects will encompass archetypal stories referencing the existence and affects of change that are prevalent in every life. These personal stories will be remembered and experienced through my choice of material, the relationship of these materials to the body, and the interaction between the object and the viewer or wearer. The various pieces of my collection will provide a window for individuals to revisit a memory. Many times physical objects help individuals move on and realize the changes that are occurring around them.

These forms will provide the wearer with comfort through the wearer’s physical clenching and releasing of the form. I will include photo documentation of this act as part of the installation. This release of energy and focus on memory will provide a sense of calm amidst the changing atmosphere. I will also incorporate the use of materials that change as the wearer uses the piece. For example, wood, metal, and leather all react to the oils, dirt, and sweat of the hand. With continued use, the form itself will change in response to the hand."
